ESL PROGRAM
ESL Courses with Description:
Prerequisite - Each course is required to indicate any prerequisite before the course is taken. The prerequisite requirement is used by the student advisors to advise their students’ coursework properly.
ESL 101 - Beginner Grammar (60 hours)

This is the first level course Grammar for non-native speakers of English. It includes a mastery of grammar structures in a written form. Students will develop critical thinking skills by coordinating readings with grammar and composition skills.

Prerequisite: TOEFL, IELTS, or iTEP
ESL 125 - Beginner listening and Speaking (60 hours)

This is the first level course of listening/speaking for non-native speakers of English. It includes a mastery of grammar structures in oral communication, development of fundamental listening and speaking skills focusing on pronunciation, intonation, logical grouping of vocabulary items in phrases and the development of life skills vocabulary.

ESL 160 - ESL Beginner Reading (60 hours)

This course is the first-level reading course for non-native speakers of English. It includes the development of basic vocabulary and relevant word groupings, introduction of reading skills, the use of bilingual dictionaries, and the analysis of texts, recognizing sentence, clauses and discourse structures and how these affect meaning.

ESL 165 - Beginner Writing (60 hours)

This course is the first-level writing course for non-native speakers of English. It includes writing simple sentences with emphasis on self-correction of errors.

ESL 201 - Intermediate Grammar (60 hours)

This is the second level course Grammar for non-native speakers of English. It includes a continuation of grammar skills acquired in ESL 101. Students will continue to develop critical thinking skills by coordinating readings with grammar and composition skills.

ESL 225 - Intermediate Listening and Speaking (60 hours)

This is the second level course of listening/speaking for non-native speakers of English. It includes an enhancement of grammar structures in oral communication, development of fundamental listening and speaking skills focusing on pronunciation, intonation, logical grouping of vocabulary items in phrases and the development of life skills vocabulary acquired in ESL 125.

ESL 260 - ESL Intermediate Reading (60 hours)

This course is the second-level reading course for non-native speakers of English. It includes further development of vocabulary and relevant word groupings, introduction of reading skills, the use of bilingual dictionaries, and the analysis of texts, recognizing sentence, clauses and discourse structures and how these affect meaning. It also includes the study of parts of speech.

ESL 265 - Intermediate Writing (60 hours)

This course is the second-level writing course for non-native speakers of English in which grammar is used in writing simple and complex sentences working toward writing guided paragraphs.

ESL 301 - Advanced Grammar (60 hours)

This is the third level course Grammar for non-native speakers of English. It includes a continuation of grammar skills acquired in both ESL 101 and 102. Students will “fine-tune” their Grammar skill in order to be successful in English Composition.

ESL 325 - Advanced Listening and Speaking (60 hours)

This is the third level course of listening/speaking for non-native speakers of English. It includes an in-depth learning of grammar structures in oral communication, development of fundamental listening and speaking skills focusing on pronunciation, intonation, logical grouping of vocabulary items in phrases and the development of life skills vocabulary acquired in ESL 225. There is also an introduction to gerunds and infinitives and an introduction to note-taking skills needed to be successful for students pursuing a degree.

ESL 360 - ESL Advanced Reading (60 hours)

This course is the third-level reading course for non-native speakers of English. It includes further development of vocabulary with emphasis on academic vocabulary. Also includes expansion of reading skills such as skimming, outlining of ideas and writing and in short summaries. Course also introduces patterns of organization and starts the analysis of texts.

ESL 365 - Advanced Writing (60 hours)

This course is the third-level writing course for non-native speakers of English in which grammar is used in writing. Course includes principles of process-writing including pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing with an emphasis on self-correction.

ESL 401 - TOEFL Grammar (60 hours)

The goal of this course is to help you feel confident and well-prepared when taking the Internet based TOEFL (iBT). This course will be of interest to the student who would like to take any version of the TOEFL in the future, and the iBT in particular. In this course, you will develop the language and computer skills needed for the exam, improving your test-taking skills in English with an emphasis on Grammar. You will then learn the types of questions in the reading, listening, speaking, and writing parts of the test, as well as test-taking strategies for each section.
