What is Accreditation?
As you apply to schools in the United States, you will see the term “accreditation.” Even though Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified schools are not required to be accredited, you should know and understand the term. Remember, as an F or M student you may only attend an SEVP-certified school.
According to EducationUSA, “institutions and programs may demonstrate that they meet and maintain certain educational standards by becoming accredited.” Accrediting bodies are private institutions that “determine and regulate educational standards.”
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) works to improve and strengthen accreditation in the United States. According to ED, accreditation helps schools assure and improve the quality of the education they offer to students. President Barack Obama and Secretary of ED Arne Duncan are dedicated to advancing the accreditation process to strengthen “collaboration for results with the nation’s diverse accreditation stakeholders to clarify, simplify and improve accreditation processes, with a more targeted, rigorous focus on value and affordability.”
If you have questions about accreditation or SEVP certification, talk to your designated school official or a representative at an EducationUSA advising center.
